The Key Laboratory of New Carbon-Based Functional Materials for Petrochemical Industry (hereinafter referred to as the Key Laboratory) was established in 2022 with the approval from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. It is also a key support platform for Beijing University of Chemical Technology's 211 Project and 985 Special Platform Construction.Professor QiuJieshan serves as the director of the Key Laboratory, with Vice Directors being Professor Fang Yunming, Professor Zhang Weidong and Professor Zhou Weidong.

There are currently 23 fixed research staff, including 11 professors, 11 associate professors, and 1 lecturer, as well as 2 Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professors, 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 recipient of the National Defense Science and Technology Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, 1 Beijing Teaching Master, 4 National Four Youth Talents, and 2 Beijing Science and Technology New Stars.

The key laboratory focuses on the forefront of the energy materials and chemical engineering discipline and the major strategic needs of the nation, concentrating on functional carbon materials and energy chemical applications. It conducts original applied basic research, mainly involving energy storage and conversion, multiphase catalysis, and adsorption separation technology. It has formed characteristic research directions such as coal-based functional carbon materials, energy storage materials and technologies (lithium/sodium/zinc batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, etc.), new catalysts and new catalytic reaction processes, biomass-based functional materials and high-value chemicals, inorganic membrane materials, and membrane separation technology. Among these, the number of academic papers in the field of coal-based carbon materials leads the world, guiding the frontier development direction of coal chemistry and chemical engineering. The key laboratory members have published more than 1,000 papers in domestic and international academic journals, with more than 800 papers published in top international academic journals such as Nat. Mater., PNAS, Nat. Commun., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem., and Adv. Mater. They have applied for and been granted more than 200 invention patents.

The key laboratory members have been awarded more than 20 national and provincial science and technology awards, including the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award, the first prize of the Liaoning Province Natural Science Award, the first prize of the China Chemical Society Award, the first prize of the Chinese Society of Particuology Natural Science Award, and the first prize of the China Invention Association Invention and Entrepreneurship Innovation Award. Some results have been successfully industrialized and applied, creating significant economic and social benefits.Over 80 technology transfers have been achieved, with licensing fees for individual technologies reaching 7.5 million RMB.In recent years, the key laboratory has undertaken and is implementing more than 40 national and provincial projects and enterprise cooperation projects, including key R&D plans of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation key projects, national defense science and technology projects, Sinopec Champions projects, and China Shenhua Group Champions projects, with funding exceeding 70 million RMB; the research has received support from renowned enterprises in the energy and chemical fields such as Swiss Aluminum, China Shenhua Group, Bayer Germany, Mitsubishi Chemical Japan, Hong Kong Towngas, Boeing USA, Shell, and ExxonMobil.
